Women's Basketball Earn Hard Fought Win Over RIT

January 21st, 2007
Elmira, NY - Tonight's Empire 8 women's basketball game between the Soaring Eagles and the Tigers of RIT was a back and forth fight for the entire game.

The game started with RIT taking a six point lead six minutes into the half. EC would continue to close the gap but were unable to take the lead until 9:26 in the half when Marcia Coakley '09 scored a jumper to give the team a one point lead. The lead in which EC had gained would not last long. The Tigers came right back with a three point basket to take a two point lead. Mary Symonds '09 would tie the game at 15 twenty seconds later. With only four minutes left in the first half Bridget Catanese '08 would help extend the Soaring Eagles lead to six points with a good jump shot at 4:16.

The first half would come to a close with EC leading RIT by six points (31-25). Kourtney Troutman '08 and Britta Anderson '07 led the team in scoring in the first half combing for a total of 15 points. The second half did not start off quick for EC but the Purple and Gold held their lead over RIT until 17:00 in the half when the Tigers tied the game for third time tonight. RIT would gain a three point advantage, but would only have the lead for a minute when Jessica Balady '10 scored a three point basket to tie the game 41-41.

RIT would hold on to their lead for most of the second half despite EC tying the score three times before retaking the lead. Symonds who finished tonight with 7 points and 4 rebounds gave EC the basket they needed to take the lead for the final time in the game. With only three minutes left in the game the Tigers made one last push to tie the score up only trailing EC by one (63-62). It would be two key RIT turnovers that would secure EC's third conference victory of the season.

Troutman who led the first half with 8 points finished tonight's game shooting 8-for-22 from the paint, 1-for-11 from outside the line for a game total of 17 points. She also led the team in rebounds with 15 boards. Coakley who was 5-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the line ended tonight's game with 13 points, while also recording 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

EC will now face Nazareth College tomorrow, January 20th in their Empire 8 conference game of the weekend. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Speidel Gymnasium.
