Adrian Jones ’08 MBA: Business Administration
Elmira College Residence Life Coordinator
What have been the highlights of your life and career?
What I enjoy most about my career is the one-on-one interaction
with the students of Anderson Hall. Knowing that I am making a
difference in their college experience is rewarding. I was a
resident of Anderson Hall as an undergraduate. I took pride in my
dorm. Thus it was also rewarding when the residents of the Class of
2014 brought home the plaque naming Anderson Hall 2010 Mountain Day
Dormitory Champions.
What hobbies, activities, community service, foreign
travel, etc. are you or have you been involved in? (Awards)
At Elmira College, I was a resident assistant for more
than two years. I served as a dorm council president and was a
three-year Orientation Leader. I worked for Sports Information and
was an Extreme Eagle. My junior year, I interned at
Elmira’s Hilliard Corporation as a marketing intern.
Since Commencement, I earned an MBA at Union Graduate College in
Schenectady. At Union, I traveled to Cleveland to participate in
the annual Key Bank Case Competition. I competed against colleges
such as Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, University of Ohio, and Syracuse
University. Though my team did not win, it was
a valuable experience and a great networking
opportunity. At Union, I also participated in a Habitat for
Humanity event where we gutted houses that were renovated for
impoverished families. I worked as an administrative
assistant’s aid, was an activities committee co-chair,
and served as the housing coordinator at Union Graduate College. I
served on the committee to pick the student speaker at the 2009
Commencement. I worked in the Sports Information Department at
Union College. I interned at Horizon Bradco, a full-service
provider of supermarket, bakery, meat, and food preparation
equipment, and at Success Recording Studio and Production, a
full-service studio and production facility.
Which class, club, activity, individual, organization or
team do you believe best prepared you for your career?
Being a resident assistant position and housing
coordinator prepared me for my work at Elmira College, putting my
business degrees to good use and helping me understand the business
of higher education.
What advice would you give students about preparing for
graduate school or careers?
The best advice I can give to students is very simple.
Stop and think. When you start thinking, you find out just how
difficult thinking is. Think about your chosen career path. Think
about what are the best graduate schools for that profession.
Consider your options. Then take action. Shoot for the stars, but
have a back-up plan.
Do you have a favorite quote that embodies your beliefs or
values?
“
Have a back-up plan for your back-up plan.”
