Mathematics
Bachelor of Arts (A. B.) or Bachelor of Science
(S. B.)

Mathematics is the language of science, and therefore lies at the
heart of all scientific endeavors and applications in business,
industry, or the arts. Mathematicians are those
scholars who teach others how to use mathematics, as well as those
who create new mathematics, extending the mathematical tools
available to scientists and others. The role of
mathematicians in our modern world is thus a crucial one; society
expects its mathematicians to understand available and relevant
mathematical tools, to creatively use those tools to solve
problems, and to effectively communicate mathematical ideas to
others.
At Elmira College, students majoring in Mathematics take a core
of subjects, including the traditional calculus sequence, linear
and abstract algebra, statistical methods, and a seminar in their
senior year. Those students preparing for a teaching
career are encouraged to follow the Mathematics Education option,
in which they will take additional courses in mathematics history,
in discrete mathematics, and geometry, along with Education
courses. For those planning a career in a fields other
than education, the mathematical sciences option includes
additional courses in calculus, probability, and numerical methods.
Students planning graduate study in Mathematics have the
opportunity to take additional courses in topology and
analysis.

Most Elmira College Mathematics courses include laboratory
components in which students work cooperatively and collaboratively
on advanced exercises that will put their mathematical and
communication skills to the test, using modern educational and
productivity software. Beyond the classroom,
opportunities for research and attendance at regional conferences
are also available for the highly motivated student.
The students also enjoy a social aspect to their studies through
the Math Club.
Students who have completed the mathematics major at Elmira College
have gone on to successful careers in education, industry, and (of
course!) mathematics.
