Bachelor of Arts (A. B.)
The curriculum, redesigned in 2008, is geared both to the
student who aims for a professional career and to the integration
of theatre studies within a liberal-arts education. Students
wishing to major or minor in theatre first complete a core of
theatre arts courses (including study of theatre history and
dramatic literature) and then select either Performance or
Production as an area of specialization. The Elmira College Theatre program offers five major
productions annually in two theatres. The Gibson Theatre features
proscenium stage and a 440-seat auditorium. The Watson Arena is a
flexible performing space permitting thrust, arena, and
environmental staging that stresses the development of new talent
and serves as a laboratory for student directors.
Elmira College Theatre alumni are working professionally as
actors, directors, stage managers, designers, and technicians
from Broadway to all corners of the country. Current
theatre students' professional internships range from those as
close as the Clemens Center in downtown Elmira to as
distant as Orlando's Disney World and the nation's film capital,
Hollywood. Recent graduates have gone on to graduate study in
prestigious theatre
schools like Boston University and
Wayne State University.
