Philosophy & Religion
Bachelor of Arts (A. B.)

Philosophy as a field of inquiry concerns the big questions that
form the basis of most fields of inquiry and forms of
life. Philosophy and Religion majors at Elmira College
learn how to grapple with questions about the basis of reality and
the nature of knowledge. They also work with more
concrete questions, such as those concerning the nature of just
political arrangements, beautiful artworks, and the good
life. In addition, students learn how to think
critically about themselves as individuals and as members of
society.
Elmira College Philosophy students have presented their work at
undergraduate philosophy conferences such as the annual
Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at SUNY-Oneonta and
participated in the regional Ethics Bowl at the University of North
Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Philosophy and Religion provides an excellent choice for
individuals considering careers in law, education, business, or the
ministry — fields in which thinking critically about
complex issues is a must. Studies have shown that
philosophy majors consistently score higher on exams such as the
LSAT, GMAT, and the Graduate Record Exam.
