Foreign Languages

Foreign Language CurriculumFaculty
Bachelor of Arts (A. B.)

At Elmira College, Foreign Languages is an interdisciplinary major offering specialization in French and Spanish. All students in the major complete requirements in a wide range of courses in their primary language, including grammar; composition; literature; translation; and culture; and other courses in the study of language in general. Finally, courses in a secondary language complete the major.

A major in Foreign Languages requires completion of the core requirements plus specialization in either French or Spanish. Students majoring in Foreign Languages are urged to spend some time studying abroad, through the Term III Study Abroad programs or perhaps through the selective Junior Fall Term Abroad program. Students seeking teacher certification in French or Spanish complete the major as well as the required Teacher Education courses.

Minors in French and Spanish are also available.

Note: Elmira College students also have the opportunity to study a number of other languages including Japanese, German, Italian, Latin, Modern and Classical Greek, Russian, and Chinese.
