Environmental Studies
Bachelor of Arts (A. B.) or Bachelor of Science
(S. B.)
Environmental sustainability is longer a catch
phrase. Communities, corporations, and other organizations actively
seek ways to lessen impact on our planet. Career

opportunities in fields related to the environment are expanding
rapidly. The Environmental Studies major at Elmira
College is truly interdisciplinary and is designed for students who
wish to pursue careers in the private sector or with governmental
agencies as researchers or policy makers. This major
also prepares students for future studies in graduate school.
Basic requirements for the Environmental Studies major introduce
students to the three major fields that pertain to a career
relating to the environment, including science, public policy, and
quantitative skills. Students can choose from two
tracks within the major: Natural Science or Economic
and Political Science. The Natural Sciences track
provides students with a background in Biology and Chemistry to
pursue a technical, science-based career. Students of
the Natural Science track work closely with professors and other
students in the Division of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences. The Economic and Political Science track
prepares students for careers as policy makers or business
professionals. Economic and Political Science track
students are closely allied with professors and students of these
two fields.
