Cultural Literacy Matters

The Encore program, our innovative performing arts requirement, gives credit to students for attending performances in theatre, dance and music during Term I and Term II of the freshmen and sophomore years. Encore provides an opportunity for students to broaden their experiences and deepen their knowledge of the performing arts by attending events and learning from high quality performers.

  Encore Mission:

Exposure, exploration, and appreciation of the classical and cultural performing arts through the vehicle of experience acquired through attendance to  provide a collaborative environment of both liberal and professional education with sufficient breath and depth to enable the students to become more responsible and productive in society.

Upon successful completion of the Encore program, students will:

I.   Identify the major historical periods in the classical music tradition and the associated composers and compositions;

II.   Accurately list at least 6 composers from the classical canon;

III.   Distinguish between the characteristics of global musical styles from different cultural heritages;

IV.   Identify diversity within the musical genres (orchestral, symphonic poem, concerto, ballet, choral, chamber, and opera), performance styles (music, dance, theatre, vocal), instrumentations (solo, trio, quartet, ensemble, orchestra, symphony), and the instrument families (wind, brass, percussion, and strings) in the classical and cultural performing arts;

IV.    VI.  Display and employ knowledge of theatre etiquette, and a practical competence for performance protocol.

The variety of performances include:
