The President’s
Council of Elmira College hosted a Ceremonial Groundbreaking of its
new dormitory on Monday, July 14.
Dr. Thomas Meier, Elmira College’s president, noted
that the addition of this new dormitory to the campus will help
keep the College among the great small colleges of America.
Among the dignitaries who came to celebrate this milestone
achievement were State Senator George Winner, State Assemblyman
Thomas O’Mara, and Mayor John Tonello.
Winner called Elmira College “The great shining gem in
Elmira’s crown.” O’Mara
extolled the virtues of Elmira College and all it brings to the
city of Elmira and Chemung County. Tonello added, “Not
only will this structure add new students to the College, but new
dollars to the community.”
Congressman John R. Kuhl added his best wishes to the College on
the occasion.
“Today’s groundbreaking is a terrific
accomplishment for Elmira College,” said Congressmen
Kuhl in a prepared statement. “This new dorm will allow
more students to explore the unlimited possibilities of a higher
education degree from a top-notch college. This dorm will meet the
needs of our nation’s next generation of college
students and bring more people into the Elmira
community.”
The President’s Council consists of regional community
and business leaders, who serve as liaisons between the College and
greater community.
The Collegiate Gothic dormitory, slated to open in September of
2010, will feature diverse room configurations, including single
and double rooms with semi-private baths, two multimedia
classrooms, an on-site fitness facility, group study and music
practice rooms. The dormitory will house approximately 140
students.
