The Clarke Health Center is pleased to
inform all full-time students and
employeesthat we have the
Flu Vaccine. According to the CDC, the flu is a
contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can
cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The
best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each
year. Every year in the United States, on average: 5% to 20% of the
population gets the flu, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized
from flu complications and about 36,000 people die from flu.
Our Flu shot is an inactivated immunization that may be given to
healthy individuals ages 6 months and over. It is recommended that
persons over age 65, adults and children with chronic medical
conditions, women who will be pregnant during the influenza season,
and children between the ages of 6-23 months receive the vaccine.
It is also recommended for those individuals living with any of the
following people: infants under the age of 6 months, persons with a
chronic condition or undergoing any treatment causing
immunosupression, or elderly family members.
The Flu shot is not given to a person who is allergic to eggs or
egg protein, individuals with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Pregnant women should get the consent of their physician.
FluMist is a live vaccine that is administered as a nasal spray
that involves NO needles.
FluMist is contraindicated for people with a known allergy or
sensitivity to eggs, egg proteins, gentamycin, gelatin or
argentine, have had a previous life-threatening reaction to a flu
shot, and in children who are receiving aspirin (or
aspirin-containing) therapy, or who have a history of asthma.
FluMist Clinics will be held after the November delivery and
administered by appointments.
