Marc Dennis to Present at the American Museum of Natural History

Elmira College Associate Professor of Art,
Marc Dennis, will be presenting
"Insects In Art" at the American Museum of Natural
History in New York City. The presentation will take place at
The People Center on
Tuesday, May 15, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. His
appearance will focus on the use of insects in 17th century art,
discussing engravings and watercolors once used as scientific
illustrations, as well as using insects and inanimate objects as
symbolism. Dennis' talk will incorporate many of his own
professional drawings and paintings to illustrate this interesting
juxtaposition of science and art.
Marc Dennis has been a member of the Elmira College faculty
since 2002, twice being voted "faculty of the year." He is a
nationally recognized artist represented by Hirschl and Adler
Gallery in New York City . Dennis' work can be seen in
many public and private collections, including; The National
Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC;
the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and the Cleveland
Museum of Art. He has been a recipient of numerous grants and
awards such as a Mid Alliance Arts Award, an Andy Warhol Foundation
Grant, and a Souther Tier Cultural Awareness Award for his research
on the Holocaust. Marc is currently leading a group of Elmira
College students in a Term III course in New York City . During
this course, students live in a loft together in Manhatten for four
weeks, creating art, attending gallery receptions, museum openings,
and visiting studios of various artists. Students are also able to
attend broadway shows and become part of the art culture in New
York.
