Elmira, New York – In their just-released 2017 BEST COLLEGES rankings, U.S. News & World Report elevated Elmira College from the north regional category of colleges to the national liberal arts category placing Elmira in the top tier with about 175 of the best liberal arts colleges among the 563 categorized within both the national and regional groupings.

Of the 563 liberal arts colleges so categorized, less than half (43%) are ranked as national thereby conventionally being viewed as the best in category.  The regional category is generally considered to be a lesser ranking than the national category.

Elmira’s introductory ranking in the national top tier places the College in the top third of all liberal arts colleges, both national and regional.

“This upgraded ranking positions Elmira College in the major leagues of liberal arts colleges nation-wide and is a testament to the quality of undergraduate education offered by Elmira,” observed Elmira College President Dr. Norman Smith.  “This distinction is further affirmed by Elmira’s status as one of only 286 Phi Beta Kappa colleges and universities in the nation.  Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is internationally regarded as the highest level of academic excellence in higher education.  Elmira College was cited by Phi Beta Kappa as its outstanding chapter.

Elmira College has also been listed by the Princeton Review as a Best College in the Northeast and by Washington Monthly as one of the best liberal arts colleges in America.  U.S. News BEST COLLEGES also named Elmira College, in 2015, as among five number one best colleges in America for student internships.
