Graphic Identity Standards

College logo
This is the foundation of the graphic identity system. It will be used on stationery, business cards, and as a signature on all printed materials. Downloadable files and guidelines explaining how to use the logo are available below.















Standard Typefaces
There are several typefaces specified in the College’s graphic identity system. Goudy Old Style is used for stationery items and most official documents. External publications should use Goudy Old Style as the primary font.

Compatible Typefaces
With current technology, thousands of typefaces are available for desktop publishers and Web page designers. However, not all typefaces reflect the preferred, professional visual image of Elmira College.

Please use Goudy Old Style typeface for body copy in all documents.

The goal is to establish a continuity of appearance that supports the College’s brand while promoting a cohesive, professional look to printed communications products.

The consistent use of Goudy Old Style establishes an image for the College that is instantly recognizable and increasingly memorable. The use of novelty and script fonts is discouraged in most cases; call The Office of Communication and Marketing if you have a question about the use of typefaces. 

Official Colors

Primary Color Palette
When using the College’s official colors, the finished product(s) should match PMS 269 Coated (Purple) and PMS 871 Metallic Coated (gold). We strive to reproduce the College’s official colors as accurately and consistently as possible regardless of the medium, material, or methods of reproduction. If you have questions about how to achieve or specify the College colors for mediums, materials, or methods of reproduction, other than offset or digital printing, or web, please contact the Office of Communications and Marketing for help.

The use of yellow to print type or fine detail is discouraged. In small amounts it does not provide enough contrast on a white background to be legible. If you are printing only purple and yellow, yellow works best as an accent color or in larger areas.

Guidelines and Downloads
The College’s graphic identity system is the primary graphic tool for identifying Elmira College. The official College logo consists of two parts: the wordmark “Elmira College” and the Seal.

College Logo

The relative position and proportions of the wordmark and Seal are locked. These arrangements should not be altered in any way. If none of these arrangements fits your application, or if a vendor suggests that you alter an arrangement to accommodate their production methods, please contact the Office of Communications and Marketing and we will work with you and the vendor to find a solution.

The seal of the logo should not be used by itself (except in special, authorized circumstances). Do not attach different words or graphics to it. The words “Elmira College” may not be set in a different typeface. It is critical to building a strong identity, to always use the seal and the wordmark together as they appear in one of the two arrangements. There are special circumstances under which the seal may be reproduced by itself. Contact Office of Communications and Marketing for help.

Minimum Sizes for Print
In order to retain the integrity of the seal design and the readability of the wordmarks, it is recommended that none of the logos ever be printed so the Seal is less than 1/4" high. The proportions and relative positions of the Seal and wordmark in any of the logos should not be altered.

Clear Space
For all versions an area of free space must be kept around the logo. No other type or graphic symbol can appear any closer than a distance equal to 1/2 the height of the Seal in the logo. No extra type or objects may be attached to the logo. The Seal of the logo should not be removed from the wordmark. The logos should not be used as part of a title, in a headline, or in a sentence.

Print Backgrounds
Although the logo may be printed in a limited number of colors, it may be printed on almost any color background. It may be printed on any solid color, screen of color, textured, illustrative or photographic background that is light enough to provide sufficient contrast for clarity and legibility.

Although the logo may be printed on a variety of backgrounds, no words or images should overlap or merge with it. It should never be combined with another symbol or logo.

To produce the logo on a dark background, the wordmark is reversed out of the background. When printing the logo in color against any color other than white, it requires the addition of Specific files have been provided for printing the logo on dark backgrounds.

Any of the versions may be printed on any solid color, screen of color, textured, illustrative or photographic background that is dark enough to provide sufficient contrast for clarity and legibility.
The Seal and wordmark should never appear on two different colored backgrounds.

One-Color
Wherever possible, the one-color versions of the logo should be printed PMS 269 (purple) or black on a light background, and PMS 871 (gold) or white on a dark background.

Two-Color
Our two tone logo is with both PMS 269 and PMS 871

Four-Color (CMYK)
The four-color process equivalent for PMS 269 is 80% Cyan, 95% Magenta, 0% Yellow and 35% Black. For PMS 871 it is 44% Cyan, 45% Magenta, 75% Yellow and 1% Black.

Separate the seal from the wordmark for use as a standalone logo. The seal may be used elsewhere on a publication as a graphic element that already has the full logo encorporated.
